GOT S01 Review

Tuesday, the 27th of January 2026

Since AKOTSK is finally out, I decided it was probably time to watch the original GOT TV series, or at least up to where the books left off, for obvious reasons. For context, I've consumed pretty much every article on westeros.org, having been interested in ASoIaF since I was a kid (who wasn't?) but never watched past the first few episodes of Game of Thrones. After a recent binge of Alt Shift X videos, though, I've decided to hop back into it, particularly since I'm exploring similar themes in my writing, namely political intrigue mostly informed by deep characterisation.

Just finished Season 1! I have the same criticism that I did when it first came out, and have maintained since - they did the women so dirty with how much gratitous nudity there is. I'm glad that HotD and AKOTSK did not seem to fall into this trap, and I'm happy to blame the showrunners for it. Regardless, though, it was a super fun romp through Westeros (and Essos) and I can tell how these characters became such cultural mainstays - I adore Tyrion and I'm genuinely engaged with each and every storyline they went through, and love how they managed to wrap up all of them in a neat bow by the end. I definitely need to read the first book again to refresh my memory on how the show differs, though - it's been so long I barely remember the plotlines.

Ramin Djawadi is again a master chef with the soundtrack - I feel his music did more to spark the "need to watch the next episode IMMEDIATELY" drive more than the cliffhangers did. I also have to say, I love how the pacing is done in these episodes. They truly feel cohesive and well-told, unlike more recent series.

Regardless, I'll be posting my thoughts on the other seasons as I get around to them. See you tomorrow!
