So: I have an issue with restarting games, and the reasons for that are well put in this video. Chief amongst these are Minecraft modpacks - I'd specifically like to cover GregTech New Horizons in this post.
I won't go into detail here (many descriptions online for this) but GTNH is a long, slow modpack that demands you iterate upon your previous progress to eventually progress through technological ages. As you can imagine, starting over from scratch every time is not conducive to this - I have started the pack probably close to ten times by this point and have at most reached LV. The reason for this is singular - I like starting stuff but I don't always have the discipline to finish. Therefore, I have decided to commit to one persistent world for the foreseeable future - I'm naming it Ad Infinitum because I have delusions of grandeur. In this post, I'll cover what I have accomplished on day one, after around 2 and a half hours of playtime.
The playthrough started as almost all Minecraft playthroughs do - I collected some wood and made some wooden tools to make resource gathering easier and complete some early quests. I started in a desert and had to make my way over to a nearby biome that had trees, and found a nice spot to set up my first base of operations, lovingly titled (on the Journeymap waypoint) "Hole". Here's what the area looks like, featuring my beginner farm, fruit trees, and Pam's gardens over to the right:

I spent the first hour setting these up, along with clearing as many of the beginner quests as I could. I resolved to take my time with this playthrough, and that includes not rushing and making my bases look nice. I'm not going to be able to build any infrastructure for a while, which includes torches, and I don't have any great means of exploration at this point yet. So: I decided to build a base in the side of this hill that was exactly as big as one torch in the middle of the room would light, which happens to be a circle with radius 5:

As you can see, the only "infra" I have currently is a crafting table, a few chests, and a furnace bank. I lucked into a chisel from a quest reward and have kitted out my walls with chiseled cobble and my floor with oak wood planks - this took another hour and around ten wooden pickaxes to mine out:

You will also see a cheeky set of mud armor, which is the best I can afford except for the wooden armor I'm currently wearing. I've cleared pretty much all the food rewards I have gotten from the quests, and luckily have some cooked meat to tide me over while I build out the farm. I have this week off, and will be trying to clear as much content, hopefully up to LV by Friday, and will try to post progress updates as I do so. I have a couple of software ideas as well - I'd like to make a web UI for the Better Questing book that allows one to at least view if not edit the quests, as I'm surprised this tool has not been made, and I'd also like to try and set up a toolchainfor getting the daily build of GTNH on my NixOS and nix-darwin systems (here's the commit for adding Prism Launcher)
If you'd like the world download of Ad Infinitum at this point, here it is. Thanks for reading and see you tomorrow!
